Oksana Sakal caught our attention on Instagram with her beautiful custom hand-painted creations where "Chinoiserie meets fashion." Originally from the Ukraine, Oksana had big fashion dreams and she made them happen, moving to NYC to study and work in the fashion world. Fast forward to the present, Oksana now lives in Palm Beach with her husband and adorable young daughter all while growing her brand Sakal Chinoiserie. It's been such a pleasure chatting with Oksana who's as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside.

What is your favorite quote or life motto?

“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.”  - Pablo Picasso

I hope my hand painted bags can “wash away the dust of everyday life”.

Please tell us a bit about you.

I moved to NY from Ukraine in my early twenties to study fashion and art. Since childhood, my big dream was to study at FIT, Parsons and work in New York fashion district. I can say that I fulfilled my childhood dreams by attending both schools and graduating college in Fashion Merchandising. That gave me the opportunity to work in the field as a stylist, buyer, photo model and most important as a fashion artist.

I’m blessed to have a beautiful family; my husband Steve is originally from Peru and we met in NY and as a result of our tender love we have a daughter named Mila. As a matter of fact, she is already learning the basics of art and painting.

How did your art turn into a business?

My two lifelong passions for art and fashion collided about 6 years ago when I took a brush in my hand and started painting on a denim jacket. I found it very intriguing to paint on different surfaces like denim, leather, suede and other materials. After trying many ways and techniques, I came up with my very own painting technique where art is not only beautiful, but also wearable and durable.

What inspired you to start creating beautifully unique wearable art?

I am inspired by people who appreciate art, interior design, fashion, and like to surround themselves with all of that beauty. I’m blessed to live and create in the Palm Beach area and to take my inspiration from local flora and fauna.

You can paint anything, but what is it about chinoiserie that appeals to you?

The world of Chinoiserie to me is a sanctuary of beauty and magic. I immerse myself into this magic and let my hand and the brush lead the way so that fashion meets Chinoiserie.

How do you balance being mom to a precious daughter, being an artist, and entrepreneur?

According to my husband, who is my #1 fan, I’m a wonderful mother, exceptional wife and an amazing artist. I launched my own brand Sakal a year ago and there is still a lot to accomplish and it is overwhelming, but I learned to take it slowly, steady and move at my own pace.

To date, what would you consider your greatest accomplishment?

My precious daughter Mila and my growing brand Sakal, which is my maiden name.

What is one fact that most wouldn’t know about you?

Ok, it’s a big embarrassing, but I still don’t have a driver’s license. I was a city girl and didn’t have to drive a car, now I have to and I'm almost ready for my driving test…...

What is the one piece of advice or lesson you hope to instill in your daughter?

Cherish who you are and always know that you are worthy of all good things (I wish somebody told me that when I was young). Also I want my daughter to be kind and always help those who are in need.

What does a perfect day in Palm Beach look like?

My husband, daughter and I starting the day off by going to a story time at The Society of the Four Arts. Then, off to lunch at Pizza al Fresco on Worth Ave. We love them because they are kid-friendly! In the afternoon we enjoy taking a walk on the beach at The Breakers and finish the day with a delicious ice cream from Piccolo Gelato.

Now let’s talk fashion! How would you describe your personal style?

My personal style has changed a lot because now I live in a warm climate, so definitely lots of floral and bright patterns on dresses, skirts, blouses. I have to say that I love dressing up, and here in Palm Beach, I can wear all the amazing dresses without apologizing for being overdressed.

Who’s your celebrity style crush?

Definitely the fictional character Carrie Bradshaw styled by legendary costume designer and stylish Patricia Field.

What’s your go-to outfit when you’re pressed for time?

LoveShackFancy floral pink blouse and white skirt!

What’s your fashion or beauty indulgence?

I take pride in my naturally long hair and to take care of it I use a lot of oils and serums for the ends.

Which shoe brand and shoe style do you like most?

As a stylist, I always like to source shoes from different brands and places. Can be a high-end designer brand or a treasured second-hand find. I love whimsical, fun shoes that always make me feel good! Pumps or a kitten heel are my favorites.

Which cocktail best describes your personality?

Bloody Mary, the less sugar the better!

If you could have dinner with three special guests, who would they be?

I would love to meet you in person soon, Olivia!

My big dream is to meet with Linda Fargo, regarded as the “eyes of Bergdorf Goodman” and talk about my collection being represented at Bergdorf Goodman!

And of course, the one and only Angelina Jolie. She is a modern-day Audrey Hepburn ~ beautiful, talented, and most importantly, a great humanitarian. She was recently in Ukraine, meeting refugees and children who suffer from war, she is so brave and kind!

Speaking of the Ukraine, we asked Oksana for her nonprofit organization of choice to support her home country during this terrible war. UAnimals is saving and helping animals during the war. Oksana says, "They are a known nonprofit and I personally think that it's very important to help animals in Ukraine right now."
